After a busy day at work, a tired parent (after a long day at their work) once said to me “It really takes a village to raise a child” and since then this African Proverb always crosses my mind. This wonderful parent, who is now family to me explains it as “a chosen tribe”. It’s so important for parents to build a support network of family and friends. Trust me, you’re not in this alone.
It takes a village to raise a child
African Proverb
Even if you think you have everything under control, there will come a point where you will just be longing for a break. Here are a few “thought provoking facts” related to this topic which is definitely something parents should think about.
1. Other people may have talents or skills you lack- so use this to your advantage
For example, another parent might be good at teaching sports, playing musical instruments or arts and crafts activities. Allow your child to build their own skills, using the help of this person.
2. Parenting can be hard, just take a break
Get the support you need. You could get a babysitter occasionally- just go to the movies or dinner to unwind. It is also important that your child learns to separate from you and Is exposed to others. All children have different needs and wants and you might not be able to satisfy them all the time. You be You and cut yourself some slack!
3. Different relationships are important for children
Children need to learn how to socialise with different people. Their relations will differ and often be altered depending on who they are interacting with. E.g Grandparents will provide them with warmth and comfort whilst an Uncle/Aunt may teach them ‘cool new tricks’ and be more casual
4. Share Resources!
Some parents may not even know where to start! Googling things can be so overwhelming because there is so much content out there, it can get a little confusing. Use social media to share valuable resources that have helped you- you don’t know who might appreciate your help. Approach a professional or your child’s teacher, they might be able to guide you in the right path.
